Swery’s next game, Hotel Barcelona, is open for business in September
That reminds me, I haven’t played the demo… Oh, I can’t now. That sucks.
The weird, side-scrolling roguelite by Swery and (to some extent) Suda51 finally has a release… window. White Owls has announced that it will be arriving sometime in September 2025.
Yeah, there was a demo during this past Steam Next Fest. I downloaded it, but didn’t get around to trying it, so I missed my opportunity. Maybe there’ll be another one! That would be nice, because I’m not entirely sure about the game. I played my fill of side-scroller roguelites, and the art style looks… uneven.
I like Swery and Suda51 in terms of authorship, but the games themselves have been hit or miss. I just replayed Deadly Premonition (review forthcoming, probably), and I’m well into Deadly Premonition 2 for the first time. And they’re both interesting games to analyze, but by analyze, I mean autopsy. They have their problems. They also have their successes. It’s a lot of awkward compromise.
But, I’ll probably give Hotel Barcelona a chance, at least. Obviously, I’m interested, because I only report this sort of news for stuff I’m interested in. I’m not really sure how much Suda51 is involved, since he’s credited as “original idea by.” That can mean a lot or a little. Is he part of development, or does he sometimes trade ideas with Swery?
Sorry, I went off on a bit of a tangent there. If you’re interested in Hotel Barcelona, you’ll get the full experience September 2025 on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
