Static Dread’s sequel, Static Dread: The Submarine, will probably involve less door knocking
It feels like yesterday that I played through Static Dread: The Lighthouse and gave my recommendation on this very site, but it was actually nearly three months ago. Still, it seems fresh out of the oven, and now solarsuit.games has announced that a follow-up is in the works, this one called Static Dread: The Submarine.
Set during (what I assume is) the same aurora that was harbinger to the end of the world in the first game, you play as a crewman aboard a submarine in the Atlantic. As it did in the original, things start getting weird, and you have to make decisions in unfamiliar places.
The trailer shows off less reliance on 2D art to depict the characters. It also suggests there’s a lot more interactivity involved, which would make sense, since people can’t exactly knock on the door of a submarine.
The information mentions that you control the submarine. I wonder if this will be like the navigation in Static Dread: The Lighthouse, which was maybe not everyone’s cup of tea. While I was pretty enthusiastic about the game, the love of it wasn’t entirely universal. Whatever. I’m the only one with taste, anyway. Also, I find horror to be a lot like humour in that there’s such a wide range of preferences and perceptions that it is hard to find consensus.
In any case, Static Dread: The Submarine is currently only announced for PC. There’s no release window, but there will be a closed playtest in a few months.
