Currently Playing – 16 – Baldur’s Gate 3 with Jonathan

Currently Playing is a show where Daniel talks to friends about games they’re playing at the moment. Every month a new guest is on to talk about what they like and maybe don’t like about a game they’re right in the middle of. In a running segment, the guests will talk about a game Daniel had been challenged to play from his backlog the prior month, before moving on to challenge him to play a new game. If you want to be on the show, email currentlyplayingpodcast[at]gmail[dot]com.

This month on Currently Playing, Daniel is joined by Jonathan (not that one) to talk about the intersectionality of video games and table top role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Penumbra City, Blades in the Dark, Vampire the Masquerade and more. And what better way to frame this TTRPG discussion than by discussing the video game Baldur’s Gate 3 which uses Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition as the basis of the gameplay? Peppered throughout the chat are comparisons between “real” D&D and the videogame version, along with stories from table top campaigns and the campaign presented by Larian Studios. There are some spoilers for story beats in Acts 1 and 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3, but since Jonathan hasn’t finished Act 2 yet, we avoid Act 3 entirely.

Daniel is a podcast producer and musician who spends way too much time in the edit to make audio sound as good as possible. He’s cutting the “umms” and “uhhhs” and replacing them with cartoon sound effects. His taste in video games is often extremely specific, and he’s recently learned that a lot of his opinions about video games are bad and wrong, but that won’t stop him from having them. His music was featured in Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. He's been producing podcasts since 2021.
