70’s Robot Anime: Geppy-X is getting localized with impressive remaster

I honestly thought the name “70’s-Style Robot Anime: Geppy X was a bad way to name a localization of a Japanese game. As it turns out, the game being remastered was actually named 70’s Robot Anime: Geppy X. Even in Japan, where it was exclusively released on PS1. The “Style” is the only added part. For clarity, I guess.

Cool! Well, if it isn’t obvious, I had never heard of 70’s Robot Anime: Geppy X, so I had no idea what was showing up in my inbox. It’s a 1999 PS1 game, and it’s being remastered by Bliss Brain Corporation and Implicit Conversions.

NOW WITH MORE STYLE

70’s Robot Anime: Geppy X isn’t actually based on a ‘70s anime. It’s described by MobyGames as an “affectionate parody” of the genre, but by Wikipedia as an “homage.” It’s hard to say, because it definitely leans on some of the cheesier elements of the genre, but also doesn’t seem to make fun of them. At least from what I can glean from the trailer.

In any case, the game itself is a side-scrolling shmup, but it’s absolutely engulfed by this fictitious anime. This includes an into theme, a commercial break, and a next episode preview. There was so much animation that it came on four discs.

The remaster not only ports the game to modern platforms, but also cleans up all those videos. According to the presser, the original Betacam master tapes have been re-digitized, upscaled, and now run at their original 24 frames-per-second. The game itself also features the modern retro-port comforts of rewind, CRT filter, and save states.

WATCH THAT APOSTROPHE

From what I’ve read, the game part of Geppy X isn’t all that impressive as far as shmups go, but the experimental multimedia nature of the entire experience has made it into something of a cult classic. It sounds extremely interesting to me, but, of course, I just came off of Blippo+ where there’s not really any gameplay at all.

It looks like the port work is mainly being done by Implicit Conversions, a developer specializing in ports. They’ve been collaborating with Limited Run Games and Digital Eclipse for PS1 ports. For example, they did the Fighting Force collection with LRG and handled the PS1 Mortal Kombat games as part of the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection with Digital Eclipse. They’re using their Syrup emulation platform, which I haven’t personally encountered yet.

However, I’m seeing they did a localization of Milano no Arbeit Collection as Milano’s Odd Job Collection. No way…

70’s-Style Robot Anime: Geppy X is coming to PC, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PS4, and PS5 on July 16, 2026.
