The Warriors w/ Beith – Currently Playing 14

Currently Playing is a show where Daniel talks to friends about games they’re playing at the moment. Every month a new guest is on to talk about what they like and maybe don’t like about a game they’re right in the middle of. In a running segment, the guests will talk about a game Daniel had been challenged to play from his backlog the prior month, before moving on to challenge him to play a new game. If you want to be on the show, email currentlyplayingpodcast[at]gmail[dot]com.

Currently Playing returns with guest Beith talking about the classic PS2-era game The Warriors from Rockstar, a videogame retelling of the classic 1979 film and 1965 book of the same name. Beith goes deep on his research, finding it to be a missing link between Rockstar’s GTA series and their next big game, Bully. There is a lot of spoiler filled discussion of the film and how it contrasts with the game, so if you’d like to see the movie be sure to track that down on the streaming platform of your choice, or play the game on modern consoles…it covers a lot of the same ground, narratively.

Daniel didn’t get a chance to mention this during the show, but he feels like the movie the Warriors directly inspired beat ’ems like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, and Ninja Turtles with the theming of the different gangs and the locations such as the subway stations/cars. (This was even confirmed by Jonathan that the creator of Double Dragon put the Lee brothers in vests because of the Warriors.) The movie is even setup as a proto example of a videogame progression where the easier gangs are defeated early on and the tougher ones are saved for the end.

In the backlog phases of the show, Daniel shares his thoughts on Astro Bot, which he thought was not as revolutionary as many other people did, and then Beith challenged Daniel to play King’s Quest (2015) starring Christopher Lloyd as Old King Graham in this modernization of a classic Sierra point and click adventure…that maybe strays a bit from the path?

Daniel is a podcast producer and musician who spends way too much time in the edit to make audio sound as good as possible. He’s cutting the “umms” and “uhhhs” and replacing them with cartoon sound effects. His taste in video games is often extremely specific, and he’s recently learned that a lot of his opinions about video games are bad and wrong, but that won’t stop him from having them. His music was featured in Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. He's been producing podcasts since 2021.
