The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – Lynchian Analysis on “Fix Your Heart or Die!”
We’re teaming up with our friends over at the show “Fix Your Heart or Die!” to present to the Maximum Utmost fanbase the first two episodes of this Lynchian podcast series that seeks to examine media that was influenced by Twin Peaks and also David Lynch more generally. These two episodes are available where ever you get podcasts and they feature prominent voices in the media analysis community from the likes of Conrad Zimmerman and Laura Kate Dale.
The below episodes focus on the game The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening when viewed through a Lynchian lens, drawing connections between the themes of Twin Peaks and the dream-like world in which Link finds himself in this seminal 1993 classic for the Gameboy.
Connected deep within the tissue of this podcast series is our lovably deceased Laura Palmer, Jonathan Off Road Rules upon whose mighty shoulders this entire universe rests. While these two episodes begin some of the lore that’s peppered through out the series, it might be helpful to also check out episode zero which contains a chat with the man himself that casually waltzes back and forth between the fourth wall in terms of being an in-universe character study and also a mask-off analysis of Twin Peaks and the works of David Lynch.
If you enjoy these episodes, consider subscribing and checking out prior episodes about Severance (part 1 of 6 about both seasons of the show), Sonic the Hedgehog (anime), Serial Experiments Lain, and more to come. There’s also sub-series addressing the works of David Lynch (so far Mullholland Drive and Eraserhead, both as 2-parter episodes, have been covered with Elephant Man coming soon) and works that likely inspired David Lynch (such as Persona and Columbo). The host Shy Fox has also revived a prior show of his that hits this main feed, The Dead Pixels podcast that focuses on the good side of “bad” games which might be a familiar concept to readers of this page who know about kusoge.
And if you like the original music for this show, consider checking out the album by the show’s producer, me! The score tries to match the dreamlike tone of the media properties being analyzed and the album expands a few tracks at a time every new episode. It will be on Spotify in December.
