Currently Playing – 15 – World of Warcraft with Evan Hilliard

Currently Playing is a show where Daniel talks to friends about games they’re playing at the moment. Every month a new guest is on to talk about what they like and maybe don’t like about a game they’re right in the middle of. In a running segment, the guests will talk about a game Daniel had been challenged to play from his backlog the prior month, before moving on to challenge him to play a new game. If you want to be on the show, email currentlyplayingpodcast[at]gmail[dot]com.

Daniel is joined this month by Evan, an old pal from college and a recent father who has found his time for gaming evaporate, but he’s still able to find some time to participate in the genre defining MMO World of Warcraft, which he’s been playing consistently since launch, now in it’s 21st year. They discuss what it’s like for Evan to be married to a popular Twitch streamer. Evan gets into the game’s longevity and what keeps people coming back for so long, but it’s also revealed to maybe not be a great thing for people to try jumping into at this point in the game’s history if they’re not familiar with MMOs. In the backlog section, they recap King’s Quest (2015) and Evan challenges Daniel to play the arcade-y Sega classic Shinobi 3. They also have a bit of a general chat about old games and remakes/sequels meant for people in their 40s.

Daniel is a podcast producer and musician who spends way too much time in the edit to make audio sound as good as possible. He’s cutting the “umms” and “uhhhs” and replacing them with cartoon sound effects. His taste in video games is often extremely specific, and he’s recently learned that a lot of his opinions about video games are bad and wrong, but that won’t stop him from having them. His music was featured in Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. He's been producing podcasts since 2021.
