Fever dream horror, Anthology of the Killer is coming to consoles April 14

Jonathan Holmes doesn’t play games on PC. Jonathan Holmes has been missing out on the fantastic Anthology of the Killer. Jonathan Holmes will soon be able to play Anthology of the Killer on his Switch, instead. If you also don’t play games on PC, you will soon be able to play Anthology of the Killer. On April 14, Anthology of the Killer is out on PS5 and Switch.

Anthology of the Killer was one of my favourite releases of 2024, though it’s technically an, uh, anthology of games that TheCatamites started pushing out into the world way back in 2020. They centre around BB, a crime zine-ist who lives in XX City, the epicentre of serial killers in the world. The anthology follows her as she seeks content for her zine, getting herself into perilous and often bizarre situations.

What makes Anthology of the Killer so delicious is its dream-like approach to horror. But when I say “dream-like,” I don’t just mean “weird.” I mean that the stories follow extremely loose, amorphous logic. BB often provides just enough narrative exposition to ground things, so it’s not so weird that it’s incoherent. The writing is terrifically sharp, capable of leveraging the strange surroundings. It’s great stuff.

SO TRUE, BESTIE

I reviewed Anthology of the Killer for Destructoid back in 2024, but I’m not going to link it because I’m bitter and petty. Good news! The console version gives me an excuse to review it here, so you don’t need to leave this page. You never need to leave Maximum Utmost. I just think you should consider that. Isn’t it better here?

I also interviewed the developer, TheCatamites, for a “premium” issue of Destructoid’s newsletter. To get the monthly premium edition, a reader had to get someone to sign up via a referral link. Now, the newsletter quickly gained over 10,000 subscribers, but I am almost entirely certain that the vast, vast majority of those were just spam accounts. No one was that excited for a newsletter written by me. So, in total, the interviews went out to four people. One was me, one was the guy in charge of newsletters, one I know is legitimate, and I’m not sure about the fourth. Point is, nobody got to read it, I don’t think they know it exists, so I’ll probably post it on this site so it isn’t lost to time.

What were we talking about?

Right, Anthology of the Killer is out on Switch and PS5 on April 14, 2026 for $8 American greenbacks. You should definitely buy and play it immediately. Or, rather, on April 14.

Zoey made up for her mundane childhood by playing video games. Now she won't shut up about them. Her eclectic tastes have worried many. Don't come to close, or she'll shove some weird indie or retro game in your face. It's better to not make eye contact. Cross the street if you see her coming.
