A Minecraft Movie – The Spin-Off Doctors Spin-Off
This post is a part of the Spin-Off Doctors Spin-Off series.
When was the last time you played Minecraft, the best selling video game of all time? If you’re over 30, it’s probably been a long time but if you’re under 20 it may be part of your daily routine. For the Spin-Off Doctors Spin-Off collective, we’re all much too old to be talking about this movie and yet, we had quite a bit to say, talking about it for nearly twice the runtime of the film.
Where other recent media aimed at children such as Barbie, the Lego Movie, Steven Universe, and Detective Pikachu all seem interested in saying big things from creators who love the stuff they’re making, the creators of A Minecraft Movie seem uninterested in “digging deep” to “mine” any sort of thematic stories that would resonate with an audience outside of the target audience of 8-14 year olds. While this movie was the highest grossing movie of 2025 and the 2nd highest grossing video game ever (behind the Super Mario Bros. Movie) it yields the opportunity to impart any significant message to an entire generation of movie goers in favor of multiple memes about chickens and chunguses. It follows a paint by numbers approach to movie making which results in a creatively bankrupt 101 minutes supposedly about the power of creativity.
And yet, it might be a case of Mission Accomplished? Surely I’m not out of touch and in fact it is the children who are wrong. A Minecraft Movie is as unconfident in its power to shape the already malleable audience’s minds as the “a” in the title implies. Rather than staking the declarative title of “The” Minecraft movie, it seems content to just be a cash grab that will be quickly forgotten by the target audience once they age into the next advertising demographic. Watch this space in 20 years when there is a horde of 30-somethings getting nostalgic for Jack Black the same way people of my cohort love Robin Williams. I look forward to our perpetual future nostalgia machine “crafting” the repackaged content of today once again for the younger generation.
