The X-Files: ‘First Person Shooter’ (with guest Marcy) – Spin-Offs Classic

Incoming X-level data burst… CIA L33T gaming confirmed… the bloodlust is unquenchable. What if you could go into your computer and when you die in your computer, you die for real? What if the X-Files, at the height of their powers, did basically a beat by beat pastiche of the Matrix almost a year after the Matrix had been out? In an episode of TV that should have been good but was only weird, written by William Gibson (of Neuromancer fame), we learn the lengths that David Duchovny would go to fuck his computer.

We’re joined for this episode by Marcy (who would go on to be one of the hosts of Fix Your Heart or Die, the David Lynch analysis podcast with which Daniel is somewhat affiliated. Twin Peaks also gets name dropped once or twice in this episode as well).

This episode originally released September 5th, 2023.

Daniel is a podcast producer and musician who spends way too much time in the edit to make audio sound as good as possible. He’s cutting the “umms” and “uhhhs” and replacing them with cartoon sound effects. His taste in video games is often extremely specific, and he’s recently learned that a lot of his opinions about video games are bad and wrong, but that won’t stop him from having them. His music was featured in Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. He's been producing podcasts since 2021.
