Point-and-click existential crisis I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is coming to consoles

As part of the MIX Spring Showcase, Nightdive Studios has announced that the beloved trauma game, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is coming to consoles on March 27, 2025. That’s “PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch,” to be specific. I’ll keep this brief for reasons I’ll disclose further on.

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream was a pretty early project for Nightdive. Based on the short story by Harlan Ellison, it was developed by The Dreamers Guild and released in 1995 for DOS and Mac. Before Nightdive became one of the best remaster houses ever built, they mainly focused on re-releasing old DOS games, more or less as-is and combined with DOSBox. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream was among those games, having been re-released roughly 12 years ago in 2013.

The reason I’m keeping this brief is because I’ve never played it. It’s actually on my list to get around to (I own it on GOG), but I haven’t really taken the time. I’d probably have to be prompted to pick it up like, say, if a company re-released it again. But that means I can’t talk about it with any real familiarity. So, I’m going to paste the description off the Steam page. Here it goes:

  • Assume the roles of five different characters, each in a unique environment
  • Challenging dilemmas dealing with powerfully charged emotional issues
  • Provocative psychological and adult-oriented themes
  • Based on Harlan Ellison’s short story “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream”, one of the ten most reprinted stories in the English language
  • Full digitized speech with over 40 different characters and state of the art animation
  • Harlan Ellison as the voice of the insane master computer, AM.

Sweet. It’s an important game, being mature without subscribing to the belief that “mature” is tits and blood. Of course, you and I can’t play every important game out there, but it’s worth trying. And now we’ve got some new platforms we can do that on. Here’s hoping that Nightdive’s next port is Harvester.

The console ports of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is coming to punch you in the emotions on March 27, 2025.

Zoey made up for her mundane childhood by playing video games. Now she won't shut up about them. Her eclectic tastes have worried many. Don't come to close, or she'll shove some weird indie or retro game in your face. It's better to not make eye contact. Cross the street if you see her coming.
