About Me

Zoey in a blue dress

Zoey Handey

AKA Adzuken

I just love video games. Growing up in rural Ontario, my childhood was a mundane and uneventful one. I did normal kid things, but I also spent an abnormally substantial time in front of a TV playing video games. The love only grew over time until I just accepted it as one of the central pillars and passions of my life.

Writing came to me after I became convinced that I couldn’t draw. It became my outlet, and if you want a complicated way to explain why I write about video games, it’s probably because I’ve never felt understood. To most people, my passion for video games goes unusually deep. Even among other gamers, I’m not sure my perspective is understood. I write to try and communicate it to people. I want everyone to see games the way I do and enjoy them at a similar depth.

I started out writing user reviews on MobyGames, but I always dreamed of making a career out of it. That always felt impossible, but I was eventually convinced to start a blog of my own. I finally got my chance writing for Destructoid in 2019, and I grew my role from there until I became a full staff member in 2023. Before that, I also wrote for other publications, including GameSpot. I still occasionally write for print publications, such as Nintendo Force on the side. And, of course, I still maintain this blog.

In the hostile environment of the internet, I get an unusual amount of warmth from people who appreciate my writing style. I don’t understand the praise myself, but I figure I must be doing something right, so I’ve allowed myself to relax into it. I also have difficulty promoting myself, afraid to appear the slightest bit boastful. So, instead, I’ll leave you with something that someone else said about me.

“What distinguishes Zoey Handley most to me is her love and respect for video games and for the people that make them. Working with Zoey is always a pleasure.”
